Abstract
The residence time distributions (RTD) in a self-wiping and co-rotating twin screw extruder with three different screw configurations were investigated. The effects of process parameters such as feed rate, screw speed, and moisture content on the RTD were evaluated. The Peclet number (Pe) was used to determine the degree of axial mixing during extrusion. Feed rate and screw speed showed strong effects on the residence time, while water content did not. The mean residence time (t£þ) decreased from 36.8 to 31.6 sec as the feed rate increased from 22 to 38 §¸/hr, whereas the spread of the RTD (¥ò) changed slightly in the range of 9.7 to 10.5. Pe values decreased from 27.7 to 17.0 as the screw speed increased from 280 to 380 rpm. There were significant differences in the flow pattern as well as the mean residence time upon comparing the three different screw configurations.
